This course allows you to dive into the latest medical breakthroughs, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a variety of careers in the ever‑evolving field of medical science.

Our Medical Science programme combines hands-on learning with real-world clinical experience, focusing on both the science of the human body and the practical skills needed to make a difference in healthcare. You’ll be supported by expert staff and benefit from personalised teaching that puts your needs first.

In the first year, you’ll build essential knowledge in chemistry, anatomy, microbiology, and professional skills. Year two focuses on understanding the healthy body and disease processes, while in your final year, you’ll conduct an independent research project and develop crucial skills in time management, critical thinking, and scientific communication.

With practical training in techniques like ELISAs, cell culture, histology, ECGs, SDS-PAGE and western blotting, history taking, measurement of vital signs, providing first aid, you’ll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for real-world challenges.

  • Focused learning: Modules are delivered through our block teaching approach, so you can concentrate on one subject at a time.
  • Professionally accredited: Our Medical Science course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology.
  • Research informed teaching: Our dedicated staff have a diverse range of experience, ensuring what you learn is relevant.
  • Boost your employability: Hands-on experience in labs and clinical settings.
  • Global experience: International opportunities through СʪƵ Global, where previous students have had the opportunity to deliver workshops in Zimbabwe and Bermuda.

Our next Open Day is on
Saturday 29 March

What you will study

Block 1: Professional & Practical Skills

An introduction to clinical lab skills, from benchwork, to professionally analysing and communicating your findings.

Block 2: Chemistry & Biochemistry

This module examines the basic principles of chemistry and biochemistry that apply to healthcare, such as genetics and mechanisms behind diagnostic tests.

Block 3: Anatomy & Physiology

This module covers the basics of key organ systems and relevance in human health and disease.

Block 4: Microbiology

Microbiology goes beyond human cells, and starts to cover bacterial and viral cells, covering global infectious disease.

Block 1: Genetics & Molecular Pathology

This module will integrate genetics and genomic into the context of human health, laboratory techniques, and inheritance.

Block 2: Organ Systems Physiology

Building on from the Anatomy & Physiology module, this module will further explore diagnostic tests and organ systems, focusing on disease states.

Block 3: Clinical Perspectives

This module will introduce students to a patient-centred care including basic clinical skills, infection prevention and infection control. It will also provide an informed, research-based understanding of infection/immunity related clinical cases to produce graphical timeline.

Block 4: Evidence Based Medicines

This module discusses what constitutes good medical and scientific evidence, not only from the quality of publication but by understanding the research methodologies and designs used, and the possibilities of bias.

During this course you will have the option to complete a paid placement year, an invaluable opportunity to put the skills developed during your degree into practice. This insight into the professional world will build on your knowledge in a real-world setting, preparing you to progress onto your chosen career.

Students have previously undertaken placement opportunities at Institute of Lung Health at Glenfield Hospital, Clintec and private healthcare organisations.

Block 1: Endocrinology: an integrated approach

This module focuses on the aetiology and pathogenesis of endocrine diseases, clinical treatments, the impact of lifestyle and the latest research/medical advances in this field. It will also focus on some areas of controversy within this area.

Block 2: Cancer Biology and Clinical Pharmacology

This module will provide the student with an understanding of the causes and pathophysiological basis of different types of cancers, including advances in therapeutic options. The principles that underpins pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacotherapy will also be explored.

Block 3: Advanced Clinical Perspectives

This module will further patient-centred care aspects which were first introduced in Clinical Perspectives (MSCI2704). This module also explores the complex health issues along with the management plans, medical advances and strategies in public health.

Block 4: Research and Innovation

This module gives students the opportunity to design and execute an independent research study. Studies may be laboratory, clinical, scientific literature or educational in nature. This module also incorporates Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Health & Safety for laboratory practice as well as statistical analysis of scientific, clinical and educational data.

Note: All modules are indicative and based on the current academic session. Course information is correct at the time of publication and is subject to review. Exact modules may, therefore, vary for your intake in order to keep content current. If there are changes to your course we will, where reasonable, take steps to inform you as appropriate.

The teaching strategy includes lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials to deliver core and advanced theoretical knowledge. Some more advanced modules will use a problem-based learning approach to explore case studies through both independent and team working. Theoretical knowledge will be expanded within laboratory practical sessions which will demonstrate good practice and provide opportunities to develop experimental design, problem-solving, data analysis and presentation skills.

eLearning will be used to illustrate more complex biological processes from the use of simple animations to more complex experimental simulations. Both formal and informal assessments may be delivered on- line, and eLearning used to develop student skills in information retrieval and appraisal, and bioinformatics.

A range of assessment strategies are intended throughout the programme to demonstrate the students' attainment of learning outcomes, and are designed to be appropriate to the competency and level of skill required. Most of the existing modules use a combination of examinations and coursework. Coursework may include written assignments, oral presentations, poster presentations, the generation of experimental results, the completion of a laboratory task such as the production of a histological specimen, laboratory reports, article critiques and project reports. Less formal on-line quizzes and phase tests will enable students to monitor their progress and understanding.

Our facilities

Medical Science facilities

Substantial investment in Health and Life Sciences has developed our teaching and learning facilities to help you develop your practical experience and theoretical knowledge beyond the classroom.

Medical Science students benefit from recently refurbished teaching laboratory space, with attached cell culture facilities. Students will have access to many different types of taught practical sessions and laboratories, for microbiology, biochemistry, and research, in different group sizes and scenarios. Later in the course, students will also access specialised laboratory spaces when conducting their final year UG research projects.

Medical Science students also benefit from the state-of-art clinical skills suites which allow students to learn and practise in a safe environment. Students will receive guidance and support from staff to ensure that you develop a precise and accurate practical ability in the clinical skills suites.
