So what would this involve?

We aim for less than half your maximum exertion capacity and will have measured this on a preliminary visit, where we also measure height, weight, skin fat thickness, blood levels of lipids, glucose and HbA1c.

We will ask you if you are well, what you have eaten and what your medication dose has been that day. We’d also like to take blood samples and measure heart rate when you attend regularly. This is to monitor the response in terms of inflammatory proteins that are raised in diabetes and which may fall during this exercise training program.

You will have privacy to change and to rest and you can have breaks if you need them. We know, of course, that it is a fact that sport may create difficulties with hypoglycaemia. This is especially true for insulin users, although some tablets may reveal the same problem. So, there will be food and drink available at all times and you can measure your own blood glucose whenever you wish.

While you are there, we may ask you to participate in some audiovisual interactive systems so that we can see if these ways help people to continue with exercise programmes. These activities should stimulating and fun and you can use the hour after the exercise to involve yourself in them, while we monitor your well-being.
