Personal profile

Dr Andrew Clifton is a mental health nurse who joined СʪÃÃÊÓƵ in January 2016 as a VC2020 Senior Lecturer, who contributes to both research, teaching and learning activities in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Dr Clifton has contributed to many funded research projects, including the Evaluation of the Chief Nursing Officer’s Review of Mental Health Nursing in England, Cochrane systematic reviews and The Three Shires Early Intervention Dental Trial, one of the first of its kind in the world.

Currently Dr Clifton is working on research projects which focus on improving the physical health of people experiencing serious mental illness, gender perspectives within the nursing profession and the dynamics of social inclusion and recovery framed within mental health contexts.

Externally funded research grants information

November 2011: £250 – awarded from the “Northumbria University Alumni Fund” to facilitate an “Experiential Open Day” for young people with mental health issues who were excluded from mainstream education and would not normally consider applying to University.

September 2012: £7500 – with Professor Amanda Clarke awarded from Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, Research Capability Funding, to explore staff attitudes towards older adults with a serious mental illness.

July 2013: £500 from HE Support Programme Award HEFCE, Unltd and the University of Huddersfield to run a work shop with a view to establishing a Social Enterprise for mental health service users.

February 2014: £12 000 with Professor Mike Lucock, South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Research Capacity Funding to undertake work to develop a potential large Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) bid with colleagues related to physical healthcare of people with mental health problems.
